Powder metallurgy is not new to turning tools, but until now the available tools were expensive. Crown has succeeded in developing powdered metal tools that provide all the same benefits, but at a reasonable price. The advantage of these super-grade steels is that a tool retains its edge longer, a direct result of the steel being harder and tougher. Even the softest wood has an abrading effect on the cutting edge of a tool. The harder the steel, the better it resists this abrading and the longer they stay sharp. Even more important, they are at their prime in terms of cutting efficiency for far longer than their high-speed steel counterparts. Remember, all tools can be made equally sharp, it is the retention of a productive cutting edge that is the important factor. These tools will keep their edge for up to three times that of M2 high speed steel. What does all this really mean? Less sharpening, more turning, better cuts for a longer time! European ash handles. Honing required before use.

Made by a woodturner for woodturners. This is a premium hone made from natural diamonds and applied using an electro nickel plating process to the surface of steel--not with adhesives, not onto plastic or aluminum. BOTH flat sides are plated as well as the two different curved edges. The flat sides are for skews, parting tools and the outside of gouges, while the curved edges fit the inside flute of virtually all woodturning gouges on the market. The flat sides can also be used to remove then pull up burrs on scrapers. Also, outstanding for honing the flat faces of carbide tools. Works great for kitchen knives as well. Do not mistake this hone with imported flat hones--even those using Alan Lacer's name. This is a true slipstone in a classic tear-dropped shape. Honing after grinding and between grinding produces a much sharper edge as well as maintaining a sharp edge. I often work many hours before returning to a grinding wheel. I selected a 600 grit as a nice balance between stock removal as well as the quality of edge produced. It is for light to moderate honing--if it takes me more than a minute to pull a sharp edge, it should be ground first rather than honed.

A different way to turn bowls without having to drill holes in your wood is to use cloth backed double faced tape to adhere the bowl blank to the faceplate of your lathe. This works great if your bowl blank is balanced and true, the tape will hold during the turning and finishing process. You can turn bowls up to 10 inches in diameter and 2 inches thick. For best results, always make sure that your work surface areas are clean and free of dust and debris before placing tape on the bowl blank. After you attach the blank to the faceplate you may want to clamp it as well for an extra secure bond. Always remember to tug or push on the bowl blank once it is installed on to the lathe to make sure you have a secure bond before turning. Once completed with your turning project, use a wood chisel to remove the bowl from the faceplate. Caution: make sure the bowl blank is dry, do not use the tape on wet wood. Each tape dispenses 108 feet of double stick tape.
